Smith played quarterback at Abraham Lincoln High School before playing for Grossmont College for two years. Then he moved to Oregon State University. The University of Oregon. Smith was the third selection during the 1999 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals. Smith played with the Bengals from 1999 until 2002, and later joined the practice squads or camp rosters of teams like the Green Bay Packers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Smith was a player with his team the Frankfurt Galaxy of NFL Europe in 2005, and then in the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League in 2007.
