David Hains is an Australian businessman and horse breeder who has a net worth of $2.2 billion. Having graduated from the University of Melbourne, David Hains made his career beginnings as an engineer and corporate restructurer. He is also the owner of one of Australia’s biggest private hedge funds, Portland House Group, which is mainly operated by his sons now.

Through his Melbourne-based Portland House Group, he invests in equities, fixed interest, property and manages funds globally. He also breeds horses in a small thoroughbred-breeding operation called Kingston Park Stud, named after his legendary horse, Kingston Town. Apart from the above, Hains became well-known for restructuring companies, such as steel giant Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel. It was in 1993, when he sold an investment to Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel for US$107 million. Another action that put him in the spotlight is taking a seven-year hiatus from his career to improve his golf skills with the legendary Australian coach Norman von Nida.
