John Tu is a Chinese-born American entrepreneur who has a net worth of $7.1 billion. John Tu is a co-founder of Kingston Technology Company, one of world’s biggest makers of memory products. A graduate of Technische Hochschule Darmstadt in Germany, together with his fellow David Sun, he started the company in a garage, in 1987.
Merging their engineering experience, the duo created a ground-breaking Single In-Line Memory Module (SIMM) that used readily available through-hole components. After ten years, the partners sold company’s 80% to Softbank for $1.5 billion, but they purchased back that portion three years later, for $450 million. Having more than 4,000 employees, the company is currently the biggest maker of memory products. Moreover, Tu is famous for his philanthropic work, being the main supporter of the Freedom Writers Foundation, and donating millions to different schools and universities. He also plays drums in his band, JT and California Dreamin.
