David Murdock is an American businessman and philanthropist who has a net worth of $3 billion dollars. David Murdock was born in Ohio in April 1923. He is the middle child with two sisters. David dropped out of high school in the 9th grade and was drafted to the United States Army in 1943 to serve in World War II.

After coming back home from war David moved to Detroit and was homeless. A good samaritan helped get Murdock a $1,200 loan and he purchased a diner. He moved to Arizona and worked in real estate. After the market collapsed he moved to Los Angeles. He acquired control of International Mining in 1978. Murdock became the largest shareholder in Occidental Petroleum after selling his interest in Iowa Beef. He purchased Castle & Cookie in 1985 which owned Dole Food Company. In 2003 Murdock acquired Dole privately and the company went public in 2009. He acquired 98% ownership of Hawaiian island Lana’I but then sold it to Larry Ellison. He oversaw the writing of the book Encyclopedia of Foods, a Guide to Healthy Nutrition. Murdock opened the California Health and Longevity Institute in 2006. He has been married five times.
