He was a center midfielder who spent his youth career playing for Royal Navy. Kamara made his senior career debut playing for Portsmouth from 1974 to 1977.

From 1977 to 1981 he played for Swindon Town where he scored 21 goals in 147 appearances. Kamara played for Portsmouth in 1981 and for Brentford from 1981 to 1985 where he scored 28 goals in 152 caps. He played for Swindon Town from 1985 to 1988 and for Stoke City from 1988 to 1990. Kamara played for Leeds United from 1990 to 1991 and for Luton Town from 1991 to 1993. He played for Sheffield United from 1993 to 1994, Bradford City from 1994 to 1995, and Welshpool Town in 2012. Kamara managed Bradford City from 1995 to 1998 and Stoke City in 1998. He transitioned to television where he has been a co-presenter for the TV series Goals on Sunday since 2000.
