Alexander Knaster is a Russian investor who has a net worth of $1.95 billion. Born Alexander Mark Knaster in Moscow, he immigrated with his parents to the United States and eventually became an American citizen. It was during the 1990s that he decided to get back to Russia where he headed the operation in Moscow of Credit Suisse First Boston.
Later on, he became the chief of Credit Suisse First Boston in Moscow, and few years later, he served as the chief of Alfa Bank, the largest private commercial bank in Russia, from 1998 to 2004. Today, Knaster chairs Pamplona Capital Management, a British private equity firm that he established in the mid-2000s. The company’s client portfolio has extended over the years, including big names like the Alfa Group. Also a TNK-BP board member, Knaster took part of a group of Russian investors, which included Mikhail Fridman and Viktor Vekselberg. Apart from investing, Knaster supported various philanthropic causes. In 2007, he teamed up with several other Russian-Jewish businessmen to form the Genesis Philanthropy, a foundation that assist the promotion of Jewish identity among Russian-speaking Jews globally. Furthermore, he has donated a substantial amount to his alma mater, Carnegie-Mellon University, as well as he set up the Alexander M. Knaster Scholarship Fund in order to aid full-time undergraduate students in the department of Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering in the university.
