John Bonham was an English musician and songwriter who had a net worth of $10 million. John Bonham was born May 31, 1948, Redditch, United Kingdom. John Henry Bonham is best known as the drummer of the English rock band Led Zeppelin. In his early years as a budding musician, John Bonham struck up a friendship with a fellow drummer who lived nearby named Garry Allcock.
Allcock was a few years older than Bonham and had already played with orchestras and was into big bands and jazz. According to John’s brother, Michael, John was heavily inspired when he watched the 1956 biopic film ’The Benny Goodman Story’ which starred Gene Krupa, the swing-era master, playing the drums. John Bonham was an avid listener of music. Amongst his favorite British groups were Johnny Kidd & The Pirates, The Hollies and The Graham Bond Organisation. He also listened to American Jazz featuring drummers such as Buddy Rich, Art Blakey, Max Roach and Louis Bellson. After the break-up of a band called The Yardbirds, guitarist Jimmy Page formed a new band when he recruited Robert Plant, who in turn suggested John Bonham as a band member. The new band was first known as The New Yardbirds and later became Led Zeppelin. In September 1980 all four members of Led Zeppelin had begun rehearsing in preparation for their first tour of North America since 1977, which was planned to kick off in Montreal, Canada. The rehearsals took place near Jimmy Page’s Windsor home where the band was staying. During the journey to rehearsal, Bonham reportedly asked to stop for breakfast, where he proceeded to drink four quadruple vodkas (equal to sixteen shots). He then continued to drink heavily after arriving to rehearsal. The band stopped rehearsing late in the evening and the all retired to Page’s house, the Old Mill House in Clewer, Windsor-where John Paul Jones and Benje LeFevre (Led Zeppelin’s road manager) discovered Bonham’s body in the morning hours of September 25, 1980.
Bonham died tragically due to aspiration of vomit during his sleep. John Bonham was only 32 years of age.
