Zhou Furen is a Chinese businessman and politician who has a net worth of $1.2 billion. Zhou Furen was born in the 1950s in Hunan Province. Zhou Furen chairs privately held Xiyang Group of Liaoning Province, a supplier of minerals and fertilizer. Zhou’s projects sometimes encountered troubles under the Kim Jong-Un dictatorship.

Former leader of a collective, he and his children own $2.8 billion (sales) Xiyang Group, one of China’s largest suppliers of magnetite products, used in making steel. Furen also has a stake in a Chinese professional basketball team. His company also invests in mining companies in Russia and North Korea. Furen withdrew an earlier bid to acquire Australia’s publicly traded Ausmelt, a supplier of furnaces to the metals industry, in February. Xiyang Group has more than 20,000 employees. Zhou Furen currently serves as the Governor of Yunnan in southwestern China, since 2007. He was re-elected as Governor by the Yunnan Provincial People’s Congress on January 24, 2008. The Governor of Yunnan is the second-highest ranking political position in Yunnan, after the chief Secretary of the Communist Party of China in Yunnan. The Governor is responsible for all matters concerning economics, politics, personnel, the environment and foreign affairs in Yunnan.
