Early Life

Hubert Ira Davis Jr. was born on May 17, 1970. He attended high school in Burke, Virginia where he averaged 28 points per game in his senior year.

College

After high school, Hubert went on the the University of North Carolina where he continued to prove himself to be a force on the basketball court. As of this writing he still holds the UNC record for highest career three point percentage. In his junior year Hubert led UNC to its first Final Four appearance in nearly a decade.

NBA Career

Hubert was selected by the New York Knicks as the 20th overall pick at the 1992 draft. He played for the Knicks for four seasons before being traded to the Toronto Raptors. After one season in Toronto he was traded to the Dallas Mavericks, where he spent four seasons before being traded to the Washington Wizards ahead of the 2001-2002 season. Hubert spent two more seasons in the NBA with the Detroit Pistons.

After the NBA

Soon after retiring from the NBA, Hubert was hired as a college basketball television analyst for ESPN.

He left ESPN in 2012 to take the job as UNC’s assistant coach.

UNC Head Coach

As we mentioned previously, five days after Roy Williams’ retirement announcement in April 2021, Hubert Davis was named as UNC’s new head coach. He is the 19th men’s basketball head coach in UNC’s history and the first African American to hold the position.

In his very first season as head coach, Hubert led the Tar Heels to the Final Four in the NCAA Tournament. With that accomplishment, Hubert has the honor of leading UNC to the Final Four once as a player (1991), twice as an assistant coach (2016, 2017) and once as a head coach (2022).
