Four days after Roy Williams announced his retirement, UNC announced it had elevated Hubert Davis from assistant coach to head coach.
Hubert subsequently signed a 5-year contract that came with a number of milestone and bonus stipulations. First off, the contract gave guaranteed a base salary of $400 thousand. For perspective, that is exactly half of the $800,000 base salary that Roy Williams had been earning.
In addition to base salary, Hubert is guaranteed a minimum of $600,000 worth of supplemental income. This supplemental income increases by $100,000 every year. He also has access to a $50,000 annual expense account and the ability to earn a minimum of $1.1 million worth of performance bonuses.
Assuming Hubert earns around $1.8 million per year from UNC, that makes approximately the 60th highest-paid NCAA coach and the second-lowest paid coach in the ACC. Early Life
Hubert Ira Davis Jr. was born on May 17, 1970. He attended high school in Burke, Virginia where he averaged 28 points per game in his senior year.
College
After high school, Hubert went on the the University of North Carolina where he continued to prove himself to be a force on the basketball court. As of this writing he still holds the UNC record for highest career three point percentage. In his junior year Hubert led UNC to its first Final Four appearance in nearly a decade.
Hubert graduated from UNC in 1992 with a degree in Criminal Justice.
NBA Career
Hubert was selected by the New York Knicks as the 20th overall pick at the 1992 draft. He played for the Knicks for four seasons before being traded to the Toronto Raptors. After one season in Toronto he was traded to the Dallas Mavericks, where he spent four seasons before being traded to the Washington Wizards ahead of the 2001-2002 season. Hubert spent two more seasons in the NBA with the Detroit Pistons.
After the NBA
Soon after retiring from the NBA, Hubert was hired as a college basketball television analyst for ESPN.
He left ESPN in 2012 to take the job as UNC’s assistant coach.
UNC Head Coach
As we mentioned previously, five days after Roy Williams’ retirement announcement in April 2021, Hubert Davis was named as UNC’s new head coach. He is the 19th men’s basketball head coach in UNC’s history and the first African American to hold the position.
In his very first season as head coach, Hubert led the Tar Heels to the Final Four in the NCAA Tournament. With that accomplishment, Hubert has the honor of leading UNC to the Final Four once as a player (1991), twice as an assistant coach (2016, 2017) and once as a head coach (2022).
