The team had been struggling, and their Head Coach, Tom Osborne, decided to change his recruiting strategy.

The gamble paid off, and Tommie Frazier led his team to the Orange Bowl four times. During his four years with Nebraska, he would win multiple college football honors, including Big Eight Freshman of the Year, Orange Bowl MVP in 1994 and 1995, and Big Eight Offensive Player of the Year. Throughout his college career, he was in and out of the hospital due to issues with blood clots, and by the end of his brilliant college career, his health was beginning to fail. After experiencing health problems during recruiting season, no NFL teams were willing to risk hiring him. He went to play for the Canadian Football League, but developed pneumonia, and was released from his contract after playing only one game. He subsequently retired, and has focused on coaching college football since then.
