Thibodeau played basketball at Salem State from 1977 to 1981. He then became their assistant coach from 1981 to 1984 and head coach from 1984 to 1985.

Thibodeau became an assistant coach at Harvard from 1985 to 1989 before moving to the NBA as an assistant with the Minnesota Timberwolves from 1989 to 1991, the San Antonio Spurs from 1992 to 1994, the Philadelphia 76ers from 1994 to 1996, the New York Knicks from 1996 to 2003, the Houston Rockets from 2003 to 2007, and the Boston Celtics from 2007 to 2010. Thibodeau got his first NBA head coaching job with the Chicago Bulls in 2010. He won an NBA Championship as an assistant coach in 2008 with the Celtics. Thibodeau was named NBA Coach of the Year in 2011 and was an NBA All-Star Game head coach in 2012. The Bulls have made the playoffs each year Thibodeau was head coach.
