He was a first baseman and outfielder who batted and threw left handed. Francona won the College World Series in 1980 at the University of Arizona and he was the tournament’s MVP and won the Golden Spikes Award.

He was drafted in the 1980 Major League Baseball Draft by the Montreal Expos and made his MLB debut for the Expos in 1981. Francona played for the Expos from 1981 to 1985. Francona has managed the Philadelphia Phillies from 1997 to 2000, the Boston Red Sox from 2004 to 2011, and the Cleveland Indians since 2013. He has also been a coach for the Detroit Tigers in 1996, the Texas Rangers in 2002, and the Oakland Athletics in 2003. Francona has won two World Series Championships as a manager with the Red Sox and was named American League Manager of the Year in 2013.
