Sukanto Tanoto is an Indonesian entrepreneur who has a net worth of $2.1 billion. Sukanto Tanoto started working in the family business at the age of 17, when he was selling spare parts to oil and gas companies. Eventually, he took over the business, as the eldest child in the family, and thus broaden it, building gas pipelines for multinationals, which was pretty profitable business during the 1972 oil crisis.

Nowadays, his conglomerate Royal Golden Eagle (RGE), owns palm oil firm Asian Agri, papermaker Asia Pacific Resources International Ltd., as well as it has an interest in cellulose producer Sateri Holdings, his biggest publicly held investment. In addition to the above, he also is the man who set up the Tanato Foundation more than ten years ago to offer scholarships to teachers and provide healthcare in remote areas. For his philanthropy and support of education, Tanoto received the Dean’s Medal from Wharton, the school’s highest honor, in October 2012. He is married with four children, three of whom graduated from Wharton.
