He started off as a staff writer with Dunhill Records and wrote and produced many hit songs in the 1960s which included “You Baby” by The Turtles, “Secret Agent Man” by Johnny Rivers, “Unless You Care” and “Little Liar” by Terry Black, and “A Must to Avoid” by Herman’s Hermits.

Barri later joined ABC Records and served as head of Artists & Repertoire. He signed Bo Donaldson and The Heywoods and collaborated with the Four Tops on songs like “Ain’t No Woman, Like The One I Got”. Barri became the A&R chief at Warner Bros. Records and produced Alan O’Day’s “Undercover Angel”. He joined Motown Records in 1982 as vice president of A&R and produced for The Temptations, Lionel Richie, and Rick James. Barri has also worked with Capitol Records, Left Bank Management, and Gold Circle Entertainment/Samson Records.
