He started out working with public television in Boston and co-created and directed the urban-themed magazine show Say Brother.

Lathan moved to New York and became a director for Sesame Street. Stan has over 80 directing credits to his name. He has directed the television series That’s My Mama, Sanford and Son, Eight is Enough, Hill Street Blues, Moesha, The Steve Harvey Show, All of Us, Second Time Around, Def Comedy Jam, Real Husbands of Hollywood, and The Soul Man. He has also produced TV series such as Roc, The Steve Harvey Show, Russell Simmons Presents Brave New Voices, Run’s House, Daddy’s Girls, and Real Husbands of Hollywood. Lathan partnered with Simmons in 1989 to create HBO’s Def Comedy Jam series. He was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in 2005 for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special for Dave Chappelle: For What It’s Worth. Stan is the father of actress Sanaa Lathan.
