He is a former WBC & WBO Middleweight Champion who is also the winner of the WBC diamond belt. His father Alberto Martinez was a construction worker and metal worker.

Sergio originally joined this trade along with his brothers. Before his boxing career, Sergio was an avid cyclist and football player. In 1995, his uncle Ruben Paniagua begin training Sergio as a boxer. After starting as an amateur he compiled a record of 39-2 (39 wins to 2 losses), in which the losses came by way of majority decision and knockout. He started his professional career at the age of 22, on December 27, 1997. He was previously part of the Light Middleweight division and he held the WBC light weight title, as well as the WBC Latino title. He also held the WBO Latino title for the welterweight division. He held his final fight in Argentina in February 2002 with his win over Francisco Mora. Martinez decided to relocate to Spain after the fight.
