Born in Charlotte, North Carolina he is a graduate of Harry P. High School (now Harding university high school) in Charlotte. While at high school, Ray played baseball and football. He turned down the opportunity to attend college when he opted to sign a professional baseball contract with the Gulf Coast White Sox, a Minor League baseball team. He soon moved up to the Major Leagues when he joined the Chicago White Sox in 1995. He also played for the Oakland Athletics, San Francisco Giants and Milwaukee Brewers. He was noted twice in the all star selection in 1998 and 2002. His playing years saw him owning a 277 lifetime batting average with 1,249 runs scored, 2,054 hits, 440 doubles, 79 triples, 192 home runs, 875 RBI and 273 stolen bases in 1,975 career games. Durham is said to have been accomplished the most in his playing times with the Chicago white Sox.
