Paul Tagliabue is an American former Commissioner of the National Football League who has a net worth of $20 million. Tagliabue served as NFL commissioner from 1989 to 2006.
Paul Tagliabue was born in Jersey City, New Jersey in November 1940. He attended Georgetown University on an athletic scholarship and was captain of the basketball team. He served as president of his senior class and was a Rhodes Scholar finalist and Dean’s List graduate. He went on to graduate from New York University School of Law in 1965. Tagliabue practiced law with Covington & Burling in Washington, D.C. from 1969 to 1989.
He worked as a lawyer for the NFL and was selected by NFL owners to succeed Pete Rozelle as the NFL’s Commissioner in 1989. Tagliabue expanded the NFL from 28 to 32 teams. Under his tenure Los Angeles lost both of their NFL franchises. He cancelled an entire week’s worth of NFL games after the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks. The games were made up at the end of that season. He was also responsible for moving the Super Bowl from Arizona due to the state refusing to establish a state holiday honoring Martin Luther King Jr. and convincing New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson not to move his team to San Antonio after Hurricane Katrina. Tagliabue was succeeded by Roger Goodell in 2006. He returned to Covington & Burling as a senior counsel and served on Georgetown University’s board of directors. Tagliabue joined the executive board of DC2024 in September 2014. The group is trying to bring the 2024 Summer Olympics to Washington, D.C.
