IDG is a company that contains many assets of business including; technology publishing, research, event management and venture capital.

McGovern was born on August 11, 1937, and in 2007 he made the Forbes 400 list of the richest Americans. He is noted for creating an unbeatable tic-tac-toe program in the 1950’s which earned him a scholarship. He worked at The Tech which is an MIT student newspaper as a member of the features staff in his sophomore year. In 1959 McGovern received a degree in course 7, or biology/life sciences, from MIT. He also worked as an editor for Computers & Automation magazine which was the first computer magazine in the world. Computers & Automation was founded, published and edited by Edmund C. Berkeley. In 1964 Patrick and his friend Fred Kirch founded the International Data Corporation. IDC is responsible for the production of a computer industry data base, as well as a published newsletter, called the EDP Industry & Market Report. After that he started a weekly newspaper Computerworld in 1967, he currently lives in Atherton, California and Hollis, New Hampshire. He is the father of four children. Patrick gave a $350 million dollar donation along wife his second wife Lore Harp McGovern to the Institute for Brain Research at MIT. McGovern serves Society for Science & the Public’s board of trustees, and is a trustee for MIT.
