Mason Hawkins is an American investor, businessman, and CEO who has a net worth of $1.8 billion dollars. Born Otis “Mason” Hawkins, he earned his finance degree from the University of Florida and his MBA from the University of Georgia in 1971. He began working for Atlantic National Bank and First Tennessee Investment Management before he founded Southeastern Asset Management four years after leaving UGA. Two years later, he also developed the Longleaf Partners Fund. Hawkins identifies himself as a value investor who has three requirements for investments: strong business, good people, and deeply discounted prices. His company is profiled in the book “Unconventional Success”, written by the CIO of Yale endowment David Swensen. Hawkins earned the 2005 Lifetime Achievement Award from “Institutional Investor” magazine, and was recognized as Morningstar, Inc.’s Domestic Equity Fund Manager of the Year alongside colleague Staley Cates. At one point, he was considered the fourth wealthiest person living in Tennessee.
