Mark Rypien was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada in October 1962. He was a quarterback who played at Shadle Park High School and played his college football for Washington State University.

Rypien was drafted #146 overall in the 1986 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins. He played for the Redskins from 1986 to 1993. He then played for the Cleveland Browns in 1994, St. Louis Rams in 1995, Philadelphia Eagles in 1996, and St. Louis Rams in 1997. Rypien won two Super Bowl championships was named the Super Bowl XXVII MVP. He was selected to the Pro Bowl in 1989 and 1991. He was the UPI NFC Player of the Year and a second-team All-Pro in 1991 and was named to the 70 Greatest Redskins.

In 2019 he was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence. His wife has told reporters that she suspects Mark is suffering from CTE after his many years in the NFL.
