He served as Minister of Public Administrations from 1996 to 1999. From 1999 to 2000 Rajoy served as Minister of Education and Culture. From 2004 to 2011 he was the Lead of the Opposition. Rajoy became Prime Minister of Spain in December 2011 succeeding Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero. Mariano married Elvira Fernandez Balboa in 1996 and the couple has two children together.
