Lee Bass initially came into riches when he and his three brothers inherited the family fortune which was founded by their oil tycoon uncle Sid Richardson. A graduate of Yale University, he went on to complete his Master of Business Administration degree at Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Upon his graduation in 1982, he started to serve a six-year term at the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department under the administration of Governor William P. Clements, Jr. After the successful completion of the term, Bass got delegated as the Chairman by Governor George W. Bush and he received another re-appointment for six years.
