He was a 6’8″ power forward who played at Coolidge High School. Washington played his college basketball for American University where he was a Consensus second-team All-American.

He was drafted #5 by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1973 NBA Draft and played for the Lakers from 1973 to 1977. Washington played for the Boston Celtics from 1977 to 1978 and for the San Diego Clippers from 1978 to 1979. He played for the Portland Trail Blazers from 1979 to 1982 and for the Golden State Warriors from 1987 to 1988. Washington was an NBA All-Star in 1980 and was a two time NBA All-Defensive Second Team selection. He is one of only seven players to average both 20 points and 20 rebounds in their college career. Washington was best known for punching opposing player Rudy Tomjanovich during a fight on the court in 1977. Washington was inducted for embezzling $500 thousand meant for children in Africa in 2016.
