He is best known for being half of the alternative rock band They Might Be Giants. Linnell sings and writes songs for the band and also plays accordion, saxophone, clarinet, and keyboards.

The band formed in 1982 and released their self-titled debut studio album in 1986. The band has released a total of 19 studio albums including the album No! in 2002 which reached #1 on the US Kids chart. Their single “Birdhouse in Your Soul” reached #3 on the US Alterative chart and #6 in the UK. They Might Be Giants have also had success with the singles “Ana Ng”, “The Statue Got Me High”, and “Boss of Me” which is the theme song for the TV series Malcolm in the Middle. The band won a Grammy Award in 2002 for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media for Malcolm in the Middle.
