She made her film debut in No More Ladies in 1935 but was listed as Joan Burfield. She starred opposite Katharine Hepburn in 1937’s Quality Street. She was listed as the “new RKO screen personality” in 1937’s The Man Who Found Himself. She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in the 1940 Alfred Hitchcock film Rebecca for which she was also nominated for a New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actress. Fontaine won the Academy Award for Best Actress and the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actress the next year for her role as Lina in the Hitchcock film Suspicion. In 1943 she was again nominated for Best Actress for the film The Constant Nymph. She was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest/Cameo Appearance in a Daytime Drama Series in 1980 for Ryan’s Hope. Joan and her sister Olivia de Havilland became the only pair of siblings to win lead acting Academy Awards. Joan Fontaine passed away on December 15, 2013 at the age of 96.
