Jimmy was the older brother of David Ruffin of the Temptations. Jimmy and David sang with the gospel group the Dixie Nightingales.

Jimmy became a singer in 1961 as part of the Motown stable. He was offered to take a part in the Temptations but the part went to his brother David instead. Jimmy’s debut studio album Jimmy Ruffin Sings Top Ten was released in 1967. His 11th album There Will Never Be Another You was released in 2012. Ruffin had success with the singles “What Becomes of the Brokenhearted”, “I’ve Passed This Way Before”, “Gonna Give Her All the Love I’ve Got”, and “Hold On (To My Love)”.
