Taft served in the United States Air Force and graduated with a degree in meteorology from the University of Wisconsin – Madison.
He worked for Chicago NBC affiliate WMAQ-TV for seven years after working at NBC affiliate KMOL-TV in San Antonio, Texas. Taft joined ABC 7 in 1984 and has also done radio work for WMAQ-AM and WLS-AM. He is known for his “no-nonsense delivery” and was named one of the Chicago area’s favorite weathermen by The Chicago Tribune. His niece Evelyn Taft does weather for CBS 2 Los Angeles.
