He joined his father’s soybean cleaning business in 1964. Stine is the founder and owner of The Stine Seed group of companies.

He owns the largest private seed company in the United States. The seed crops are located in rural Adel, Iowa on 15,000 acres. Stine started out in the field of soybean genetics in the 1960s. He patented technology in the early 1990s and makes millions of dollars a year in royalties. His company also develops biotechnology and corn genetics. As a philanthropist Stine donates to the May Clinic and his alma matter McPherson College. Harry Stine is the richest man in Iowa. His companies account for 60% of all the U.S. soybean acreage. FORBES has estimated his company to be worth almost $3 billion. Stine started the first private soybean research and development company in the U.S., Improved Variety Research. In 1979 he started selling soybean seed under the Stine Soybean Seeds label. He started selling corn and soft red winter wheat in 1992.
