He is known for his outspoken comments regarding the private equity industry. Hands moved to the tax haven of Guernsey in 2009 from the United Kingdom. He was educated at Mansfield College, Oxford, and The Judd School. He started his career out as a Eurobond trader at Goldman Sachs in 1982 and became Head of Eurobond trading and head of global asset structuring world-wide for Goldman’s European division. He left Goldman Sachs in 1994 to start Nomura’s Principal Finance Group. He was reported to have generated nearly $2 billion worth of profits by 2000 and became a star financier in London. Hands founded Terra Firma Capital Partners in 2002 and the company debuted with a $2 billion Euro private equity fund. Guy and his wife Julia own the Hand Picked Hotels chain of 17 properties.
