Frank R. Lautenberg was an American politician who had a net worth of $55 million. Born Frank Raleigh Lautenberg (January 23, 1924 – June 3, 2013) in Paterson, New Jersey, he was the U.S. Senator from New Jersey, as well as an avid member of the Democratic Party. A graduate from Cornell University with a degree in agriculture, Lautenberg opted journalism to be his first career.
Before entering politics, he also served as the chairman and chief executive officer of Automatic Data Processing, Inc. He first started to serve in the U.S. Senate in 1982, holding the position until 2001. Following a brief hiatus, Lautenberg accepted the plea from his party to run for the post again after Robert Torricelli dropped out of the 2002 Senate race due to scandal. Thus, he was re-elected to the Senate where he served from 2003 until his death in June 2013. Frank R. Lautenberg was the last serving veteran of World War II in the U.S. Senate and he has been called “the last of the New Deal liberals”. He would be forever remembered for his legislative struggles against drunk driving, and his support of spending for Amtrak and urban public transportation, as well as for his efforts for tougher environmental regulations, greater consumer protections and harsher investigations of wrongdoing by Wall Street.
