He gave speeches and lectures on investment, and invited churchgoers to invest large amounts in his real estate development deals focused on improving and renovating impoverished areas such as inner-city ghettos. His series of lectures was called the “Building Wealth Tour”, and included stops at some of the nation’s largest mega-churches, including New Birth Baptist Church and Lakewood Church. He collected over $11 million and then disappeared. He has since been charged with fraud by the Securities and Exchange Commission, and has been ordered to pay over $14 million.
