He is best known for being the drummer and co-lead singer of the rock band Grand Funk Railroad. The band formed in 1969 and Brewer is the only member who has stayed with them the entire time.

Grand Funk Railroad released their debut studio album On Time in 1969 and also released the album Grand Funk the same year. They released the album Closer to Home in 1970 which reached #6 in the US and #5 in Canada and their album Survival was released in 1971 reaching the same positions on those charts. Grand Funk Railroad released the album E Pluribus Funk in 1971 which reached #3 in Canada and #5 in the US. They released the album Phoenix in 1972 and their album We’re an American Band was released in 1973 and reached #2 in the US. Their album Shinin’ On was released in 1974 and reached #2 in Canada. They also released the albums All the Girls in the World Beware!!! In 1974, Born to Die in 1976, Good Singin’, Good Playin’ in 1976, Grand Funk Lives in 1981, and What’s Funk? In 1983. Their singles “We’re an American Band” and “The Loco-Motion” both reached #1 in the US.
