Desh Bandhu Gupta is an Indian pharmacist who has a net worth of $3.9 billion. Born in 1938 in Mumbai, Gupta earned his wealth as the founder of Lupin Limited, a pharmaceutical company. A Doctor of Science who also has a Master’s degree in Chemistry of Bombay University, Gupta started his career path as an assistant professor at the Birla Institute of Technology and Sciences.

Governed by his desire to fight life-threatening diseases led him to launch Lupin in 1968 as a little vitamin company with a really small investment of $120. During the years, Lupin grew into one of the leading producers of anti-tuberculosis drugs and Cephalosporin antibiotics segments worldwide. Today, the company holds six research centers based in India and Japan, and it is operating in 12 factories with an income of about $1.7 billion annually. Last year, Gupta or, as he is popularly called, DBG handed over the pharmaceutical empire to his children: Vinita, his daughter, and Nilesh, his son, but he remains to serve as Chairman.
