Declan McDaid was born in Greenock, Scotland, and began his youth football career playing for Greenock Morton in 2011. He spent two years with the youth league, and was subsequently invited to play his first senior level game on April 6, 2013.

He was substituted in during a match against Airdrie United. Greenock Morton went on to win the match, 5-2. He was invited to sign a contract with Greenock Morton, but he chose to sign with Patrick Thistle instead. Patick Thistle has only recently been promoted to the Scottish Premier League. McDaid has been tapped to join their U20 squad. In addition to his professional play, he began playing for the Scotland Schools U18 squad in 2013. He was invited after scouts saw his level of play while with Greenock Morton during SFL Reserve League games.
