Born in Amsterdam, Charlene de Carvalho-Heineken graduated from Rijnlands Lyceum Wassenaar with a degree in Science, and then earned her law degree from the University of Leiden. She is the daughter of Freddy Heineken and Lucille Cummins, the Dutch industrialist and American daughter of whisky distillers, who owned the majority of beer brewer, Heineken International. She inherited the company from her father in 2002. Her great-grandfather originally purchased the company in the mid-1860s. Her father bought back into the company in the 1940s, after much of it had been sold off. During her father’s time with the company, it grew into an internationally recognized brand. She owns currently serves on the board of management. Her husband, Michel de Carvalho, an investment banker and former Olympic luger, serves on the advisory board.
