He wrote for and produced the series Oliver Beene and was a supervising producer for the series Quintuplets and American Dad!. Carter Bays worked for the Late Show with David Letterman as a writer. He was nominated for Primetime Emmy Award for the show in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002. Bays was also nominated for Primetime Emmy Awards for How I Met Your Mother in 2009 and 2010.
