Born in Lockport, New York, Yates attended Hobart College and then served time in the United States Navy. He first appeared in published format at sixteen years old in Science and Mechanics Magazine, and has since become best-selling automotive author. At one point, he has started to serve as a sport commentator and even created the screenplay for the film The Cannonball Run, which featured Burt Reynolds.
