He is an outside linebacker who played football and basketball at Lamar High School. Orakpo played his college football at the University of Texas where he was the Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year in 2005 and the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year in 2008.

In 2009 he signed a five year deal with the Redskins for $20 million. Orakpo signed a four year deal with the Titans for $32 million in 2015.
