He was a U.S. National Amateur Featherlight champion as an amateur and has competed as a lightweight, light welterweight, and welterweight. Brandon Rios won his first professional boxing match by defeating Raul Montes in July 2004.

In October 2008 he had a draw against Manuel Perez to bring his record to 18-0-1. Rios won the vacant NABF lightweight title by beating Jorge Teron in February 2010.
