His number was retired in 2003 by his high school. Phillips was drafted in the 2nd round of the 1999 draft by the Montreal Expos and opted not to attend the University of Georgia. He played in the minor leagues and was traded to the Cleveland Indians in June 2002. He made his MLB debut for the Indians in September 2002. He played with Cleveland until he was traded to the Cincinnati Reds in 2006. During his career Phillips has been a three time All-Star in 2010, 2011, and 2013.
