He competed for his high school’s wrestling team and was a two time NAIA All-American at Dana College. Henderson turned pro when he defeated Dan Gregary in November 2006.

In October 2009 he won the Interim WEC Lightweight Championship by defeating Donald Cerrone. In January 2010 Henderson defeated Jamie Varner to win and unify the WEC Lightweight Championship. He lost the championship to Anthony Pettis in December 2010. Henderson won the UFC Lightweight Championship in February 2012 when he defeated Frankie Edgar. He lost the title to Anthony Pettis in August 2013. Henderson defeated Brandon Thatch in February 2015 to bring his MMA record to 22 – 5. He also won a Bronze Medal competing for the United States in Men’s Grappling at the 2011 IBJJF World Jiu-Jitsu Championship.
