He is part of the heavyweight division in the Ultimate Fighting Championship and is a former interim UFC Heavyweight Champion. Nogueira fought in Pride Fighting Championships in Japan and held the Pride Heavyweight Championship from November 2001 to March 2003. He was also a PRIDE FC Heavyweight Grand Prix Finalist in 2004.
