She was a true crime author who wrote about serial killers. Rule authored the book The Stranger Beside Me which was about Ted Bundy, who was her co-worker.

She wrote the book Small Sacrifices about child murdered Diane Downs. The majority of Rule’s books focused on murders occurring in her adopted area of the Pacific Northwest. She studied criminology, creative writing, and psychology at the University of Washington and then worked as an officer for the Seattle Police Department. Rule has written books under the pseudonym Andy Stack including The Lust Killer, The Want-Ad Killer, and The I-5 Killer. Ann Rule passed away on July 26, 2015 of congestive heart failure at 83 years old.
