Steen is a centre player who shoots left right handed. Steen was a player with Frolunda HC in the Swedish Hockey League from 2000 until 2004. He also played for Modo Hockey from 2004 to 2005. He was selected as number 24 during the National Hockey League draft in 2002 by the Toronto Maple Leafs. Steen was a player in Toronto from 2005 until 2009 before being transferred for the St. Louis Blues in 2008 , where he has been playing ever since. In 2013, he signed a three-year contract for Blues Blues at $17.4 million. Steen also plays for Sweden in international competitions and was awarded the Silver Medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. In the 2013-2014 NHL lockout, he played with Modo and Modo in Sweden.
