May was undrafted as a player and was drafted into the National Hockey League, the American Hockey League, the International Hockey League, the Atlantic Coast Hockey League, and the Western Professional Hockey League. Alan May started his NHL career in the NHL and played for The Edmonton Oilers, Washington Capitals, Dallas Stars, and Calgary Flames. He was a part of 393 NHL games, scoring 41 goals and 45 assists, as well as 1,333 minutes of penalty time. May is the only player to have the distinction of being traded during the NHL deadline for trades four times, which was surpassed in the year 2018. He was the coach of his team the Dallas Stallions roller hockey team in 1999. He has also worked in the role of a hockey analyst at NBC Sports Washington.
